In "Gonzales' Tamales" (Friz Freleng, 1958), Speedy Gonzales' friends are tired of competing with him for romantic attention from the lady mice, so they hatch a plot to send the "gringo pussycat" Sylvester to run him out of town. Yeah, like that's gonna work! Stan Freberg helps add some vocal variety to the ensemble of Mexican mice. Mel Blanc voices Speedy and Sylvester. | GoldenAgeCartoons.com

"Mexican Boarders" (Friz Freleng, 1962) was one of only two cartoons to feature Speedy Gonzales' cousin, Slowpoke Rodriguez. He also made an appearance on "The Bugs Bunny Show" around the same time. Freleng once stated that he found Slowpoke funnier than Speedy, but he was SO slow that he ate up too much screen time. | GoldenAgeCartoons.com

"A Kiddie's Kitty" (Friz Freleng, 1955) marked the debut (and only animated appearance) of Suzanne, a little girl who literally loved her toys and pets to death. Suzanne had a brief run in various Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies comic books shortly afterward, in which she was part of a "Peanuts"-like group of kids. Nearly 40 years later, she inspired Elmyra, a similar character in the early 1990's TV series "Tiny Toon Adventures". Public Service Announcement from us, by the way: please keep cats FA

Director Friz Freleng disliked the character of Elmer Fudd, at least as a foil for Bugs Bunny. He viewed Fudd as a "simpleton", and thought Bugs came off as a bully when facing him. In the 1950's, Freleng found potential in pairing Elmer with other characters, including the Goofy Gophers in this often-overlooked gem "Pests For Guests" (1955). The king of re-used gags, Freleng used the "balloon and firecracker in the chimney", "falling down stairs", and "stuck in a water cooler" gags in this bril

Friz Freleng was as much of a perfectionist as he was economical. If a concept or gag worked especially well, he would unapologetically recycle it somewhere down the road. If he thought he could do something BETTER, he took the opportunity. In this complete cartoon (courtesy of the public domain!) Porky Pig is tormented by a nameless cat who keeps him awake at night by serenading him with loopy renditions of everything from classical opera to jazz to early 20th century pop standards. Sometimes, a gag is so corny, it's actually brilliant. In "Shop Look and Listen" (Friz Freleng, 1940), a group of mice take a tour of a department store. They encounter numerous sight gags, including this painting of "The Last of the Mohicans". | GoldenAgeCartoons.com

In case you missed it, something interesting happened today. MeTV aired a Warner Bros. cartoon that hasn't been seen with its final "gag" intact for decades! In the mid 1950's, Warner Bros. decided there was a market for their back catalog of older, black and white cartoons, since cartoons made perfect filler for afternoon kids' shows, and television hadn't transitioned to color yet anyway. Warner had a TV distribution outlet called Sunset Productions, with a subsidiary called Guild Films, which

Friz Freleng really liked to make cartoons about insects. He once drew the ire of Bing Crosby when he caricatured him as a fly in "Bingo Crosbyana" (1936). He often focused on ants, whether they were raiding a picnic ("The Gay Anties" (1947)) or going to war with Elmer Fudd ("Ant Pasted" (1953)). In one early cartoon, "The Lady in Red" (1935), Freleng used cockroaches infesting a Mexican cantina as fodder for musical entertainment, only to have them attacked by a parrot. In retaliation, the bugs

Friz Freleng was a master of recycling gags and plot points, often adapting them to different characters. In "Stooge For a Mouse" (1950), a mouse plays Sylvester and a bulldog against each other, until the two ultimately knock each other senseless, leaving the mouse free to raid the kitchen. In "Bugsy and Mugsy" (1957), Bugs Bunny employs similar tactics on gangsters Rocky and Mugsy. The final gag in each short involves a magnet. 𝐎𝐆 𝐔𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐀𝐃 𝟏𝟗𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐒 on Instagram: "Released in 1946, Of Thee I Sting is a witty Looney Tunes short directed by Friz Freleng. The cartoon reimagines mosquitoes as military pilots, launching a full-scale air raid on a sleeping man. They march, salute, and strategize like soldiers, complete with a commanding officer barking orders. The action unfolds like a miniature war movie, blending patriotic parody with slapstick chaos. Every mosquito mission is scored to lively orchestral music, tu
